Four Things To Ask Your Childs Reading Teacher

Research has proven that reading skills provide the foundation for learning and life. If these skills are not mastered, a child may quickly fall behind in school. So how can a parent be assured that their child is up to speed in their reading program? Here are four things to ask your child’s reading teacher:

1. What reading curriculum are you using?
Go a bit further and take a look at the reading books, explore what reading skills are stressed and find out
how the teacher implements the material.

2. What does my child’s reading score show?
Find out where your child compares and if he/she can actually read better than the test score; specifically
look for your child’s strengths and weaknesses.

3. How well does my child participate in class?
Ask if your child seems to enjoy classtime reading; if your child can work alone easily; and if he/she
actively joins group activities. (If a child actively participates, they are illustrating excitement
and confidence in their learning.)

4. In what ways can I develop their reading at home?
Reading will stretch far beyond the classroom with parent involvement. Ask the teacher for tips on
how to help your child develop the love of reading.
